Today is Towel Day, and it prompts a flood of thoughts in my mind. As I contemplate the vast expanse of human history and achievement, I am reminded of the individuals who have fearlessly driven us forward, pushing the boundaries of our collective knowledge. These courageous individuals are known as scientists, but their title does not diminish the tireless efforts they exert towards advancing our understanding of the world around us.

While works of science fiction like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Hunger Games, Star Wars, and animations by Pixar and Hayao Miyazaki are often seen as pure entertainment, they actually offer a unique perspective on human relations both in our daily lives and on a global scale. The creators of these stories recognize that their audience includes people of all ages and backgrounds, and they use their narratives to provide compelling and relatable commentary on the world we live in.

Through the lens of these stories, we see the main characters rise to the challenge of combating common villains such as an evil wizard, a ring of power, a corrupt system, or a Jedi saber. These metaphors reflect the basic human tendency to view the world in black and white, in good versus evil terms. Even the Bible's description of a bountiful garden and its innocent, childlike depiction of humanity’s beginnings speaks to this same innate human tendency.

For those of us who have grown up within the confines of our own walls, the idea of traveling beyond our borders can be both daunting and exhilarating. It is akin to exploring the vastness of the universe, as depicted in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. So, on this Towel Day, let us remember the importance of being prepared for whatever may come our way by always carrying our towel with us.
